If you’ve been invited to a Lebanese wedding, the short version is: dress up more than you think you need to. Lebanese weddings, and the events around them, run considerably more formal than a typical Western wedding, and guests who show up underdressed tend to notice it fast. This guide covers what actually works, what to avoid, and how to handle the fact that one wedding often means several separate events, each expecting a different outfit.
Why Lebanese Wedding Guest Dressing Is Different
A Lebanese wedding is rarely a single event. Between the engagement (khotbeh), the katb kitab, the henna night, and the wedding reception itself, guests close to the couple can be expected to attend three or four separate occasions, each with its own dress code. Evening wear that would be reserved for a gala elsewhere in the world is standard guest attire here, especially for the reception.
What to Avoid
A few rules hold regardless of the specific event:
- Don’t wear white or ivory. It’s reserved for the bride, and showing up in anything close to it is one of the fastest ways to stand out for the wrong reason.
- Don’t underdress. “Smart casual” isn’t really a category at a Lebanese wedding reception. If you’re unsure, lean more formal, not less.
- Don’t try to outshine the bride. Bold and elegant is welcome; anything that competes with the bridal look isn’t.
What Works, by Event
Engagement (khotbeh): Slightly less formal than the wedding itself, but still an evening-dress occasion. A shorter or midi-length evening dress is usually the right call.
Katb kitab: Formal, often held earlier in the day but dressed as if it were evening. A structured, elegant dress works well here.
Henna night: More relaxed and often more colorful, sometimes with a specific dress code set by the couple. Worth asking in advance.
Wedding reception: The most formal of the events. This is where a full-length or statement evening gown is expected, particularly if you’re part of the close family or wedding party.
The Real Problem: One Outfit Isn’t Enough
Attending even two or three of these events means needing two or three different looks, and buying that many occasion dresses for a handful of nights isn’t realistic for most guests. This is exactly the gap dress rental fills: a different, appropriate look for each event, without the cost or closet space of owning five evening gowns you’ll wear once each.
At The Four Vows, our evening dress collection covers this range, from shorter, lighter pieces suited to an engagement or henna night, to full-length gowns for the reception itself. Rentals run from about $180 to $650 depending on the piece, and each one is professionally cleaned and fitted before you wear it.
